Will Visual Studio maintain desktop application development in the future?

I am in the process of selecting a development environment for a long-term development and service project.

The project has a strict set of security requirements that must be satisfied and documented.

  • There is a contractual obligation to protect the data and code used for analyses.
  • Since the use of a Cloud service or exposure of the data to The Internet risks exposure to insider threat, the system will literally run on machines in a monitored secure room. Data and work will literally not leave the room.
  • Any exposure to The Internet is considered a breach of contract.
  • Updates to development tools are rigorously checked against STIGs.
  • Open Source triggers an additional set of requirements that must be satisfied.

Is there any available roadmap documentation that states continued support for desktop application for Visual Studio over the next 5 or 10 years?

    Hi @doug.kimzey ,

It's always difficult to tell about the future, the latest version of Visual Studio 2019 has official support till 04/10/2029, so this basically means that it should support desktop application development at least until then, and personally I don't believe Visual Studio is going anywhere, rather is here to stay.

You'll find the Visual Studio roadmap here:
