Printer Migration

Hi

I have a File server (2008 R2) that runs as a printer server as well, so basically I want to migrate the print server to a new dedicated server (2019), and the printers not deployed via GP, all manual installation via end users.

I know I can export the printer configs to a file and import it to the new server by using Printer Management, but I don't think the End Users mapping will change to the new server by doing that, so means I cant remove the print server from the old.

My questions are,

  1. Since there are too many end-users, it's hard to reinstall printers manually, is there any way to point the end-users to the new print server without deploying the printers via GP or running startup scrips for the users?
  2. I have exported the printer-configs to a file from the current print server (2008 R2) by using the Printer Management and not yet imported to the new server yet, IF I import that file to the new server, what are the issues can happen to the end-users? will they still able to use the printers or any interruptions can happen to them?

Thanks in advance

    Hi,

Please be informed that there is no way to directly point the end-user to the new printer server without GP or scripts.

Only exporting and importing the prniter-config file cannot support the end userd to continue using the printers.

You must publish the new printer server in AD after migraiton and use the GP to deploy the printers to the end user.

And since the old server (2008 R2) and new server (2019)'s version gap is large, there might some poblems after migration. So, we suggest that you could directly deploy a new printer server on the new 2019 server. Then the end users will be pointed to two printer servers and they can gradually deprecate the old 2008 server.

Of course, if you would like to migrate the printer server, please check the vedio or article for reference.
