Move from Windows Essentials 2016 to Essentials 2022

I have not done this in a while. I have a client that is moving from Windows Server 2016 Essential to Windows Server 2022 Essentials. Is there any plan/order in which I should migrate the Active Directory domain and files to from 2016 to 2022? Thanks.

Normally you only get (1) version upgrade, otherwise its a fresh install.
In your case 2016 can do a 2019 upgrade, however the upgrade from 2016 to 2022 is not supported.

The two prerequisites to introducing the first 2019 or 2022 domain controller are that domain functional level needs to be 2008 or higher and older sysvol FRS replication needs to have been migrated to DFSR

I'd use dcdiag / repadmin tools to verify health correcting all errors found before starting any operations. Then stand up the new 2019 or 2022, patch it fully, license it, join existing domain, add active directory domain services, promote it also making it a GC (recommended), transfer FSMO roles over (optional), transfer pdc emulator role (optional), use dcdiag / repadmin tools to again verify health, when all is good you can decommission / demote old one.

Thanks, I was looking for more a plan like:

    1. Check old DC health and functional level
    2. Promote new DC
    3. Create shares on new DC
    4. Copy files from old DC to new DC
    5. Install apps

Yes, that's basically it. After the DC is functional you could consider the storage migration
