Stop using OneDrive and clear the files that are there

I want to get all my files back from one drive so they are on my laptop only. Unfortunately when I delete the file from one drive it also deletes the file on my laptop.
How can this be achieved. The deletion on the laptop still seems to happen even though Onedrive sync is turned off. If I create a file locally it is transferred to Onedrive even though syncing is turned off.
I have run in problems knowing which files are the latest and the last two I used were corrupted and I had to delete them.
