Try disabling it via PowerShell, as at the very least you should get a more detailed error message therein. Use the following cmdlet:
Disable-Mailbox user@domain.com -Archive
One possible reason why you cannot disable it is if the mailbox is on hold, in which case you have to remove any holds first before attempting the cmdlet. You might as well just leave it enabled :)
