Visio Desktop 365 still requires checkout of SharePoint Online file even when checked out in SharePoint

One of my users is encountering a strange problem with Office 365 Visio desktop app and opening a SharePoint Online file that has been checked out. Visio still prompts to check out the file. It's not detecting that the file was already checked out in SharePoint.

This is not the case with every file. I have verified identical SharePoint library and file permission settings between offending and working files.

I've done the following with no success

  1. Cleared browser cache and checkout again
  2. (in SharePoint):
    • Checked the file out
    • Checked it back in (overwrite minor version)
    • Checkout again and open in Visio

Any insight or troubleshooting suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
