Reuse Endpoint Hostname with Minimum Downtime

Hello, Since Azure will retire CDN Standard from Akamai, I need to move to Microsoft CDN, but when trying to add my current endpoint name, it tells me that "That endpoint name already exists" . But before deleting the Akamai endpoint I looked up in internet and I found this reply from 2015 https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/azure/en-US/c8731187-2aa3-4fb3-a345-6b5e276d77b9/reuse-endpoint-names?forum=azurecdn that says that we can't reuse endpoint names and the 'feature' was planned. But it has been so long ago. So, is it possible right now to delete the old end point and reuse it? Would it be instant or how long downtime can I expect for this change? Thank you

    Hello @David ,

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A Platform. Thank you for reaching out & hope you are doing well.

I understand that you would like to know if it is possible to delete an old Azure CDN endpoint hostname and reuse it with another CDN provider with minimum downtime.

Yes, it is possible to delete the old CDN endpoint and reuse it in another CDN provider. The endpoint should be available to re-use within 5 to 10 minutes of its deletion, but you should consider some downtime which is needed for the creation of a new endpoint and updating the DNS records.

NOTE: It is not possible to rename a CDN endpoint. So, you need to create a fresh endpoint with the required endpoint name as soon as it is deleted from your Akamai CDN profile.

Another important point to consider if you have custom domain enabled on your CDN:

To prevent dangling DNS entries and the security risks they create, starting from April 9th 2021, Azure CDN requires removal of the CNAME records to Azure CDN endpoints before the resources can be deleted. Resources include Azure CDN custom domains, Azure CDN profiles/endpoints or Azure resource groups that has Azure CDN custom domain(s) enabled.

You can refer the below article which shares the best practices when migrating from one CDN service to another.
