SharePoint Alternate Access Mapping on Domain URL Not Working

Hello,

I am trying to put an SP site on the main domain URL as an AAM but it is not working. It keeps giving refused to connect.

Meanwhile, it works fine on any subdomain that I put it as an AAM. Note also, that the main domain if I put any IIS app on it works fine.

So, the problem is not from the domain it self. I want to put an SP site to be accessible on Internet using domain.com (sub.domain.com) works fine.

After referring to logs, I encountered the following:

" The web application at [url] could not be found. Verify that you have typed the url correctly. If the url should be serving existing content, the system administrator may need to add a new request url mapping to the intended application. "

Several articles are suggesting changing the Target Framework or something with the permission. However, Target Framework can't be changes since we are talking about SPFX and for permissions things are working fine for subdomains or even hosting any app on the domain URL.

According to your original post, I understand that AAM does not work in the one domain.

Is there any error message? You could provide some screenshots.

And any clues in the ULS logs?

Actually there are no error messages, just a warning that I don't think is affecting:

Alternate access mappings have not been configured. Users or services are accessing the site http://(computername) with the URL http://domain. This may cause incorrect links to be stored or returned to users. If this is expected, add the URL http://nhic.gov.sa as an AAM response URL. For more information, see: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=114854"/>

AAM is not working if set to the main domain URL (example.com) but works if set to a subdomain (x.example.com) that is our weird problem.

In the AAM settings for main domain, what is the default zone for the web application. A default zone URL must not point to the computer name of a front-end Web server. Reference: https://video2.skills-academy.com/en-us/sharepoint/technical-reference/alternate-access-urls-have-not-been-configured

The default one for that web app is pointing to the front-end server with the port 24963. It works fine for the default zone as well as the internet if the URL starts with a subdomain not the main domain.

Basically, we need this site to be accessible through internet with the domain URL (www.example.com) not (www.sub.example.com)

What is the FQDN of computer?

It may be caused by DNS/IP is not configured correctly in the server.

Finally, found something in logs:

WebHost failed to process a request. Sender Information: System.ServiceModel.ServiceHostingEnvironment+HostingManager/12837776 Exception: System.ServiceModel.ServiceActivationException: The service '/_vti_bin/client.svc' cannot be activated due to an exception during compilation. The exception message is: The Web application at http://{url}:80/_api/SP.Web.GetContextWebThemeData?lcid=1033 could not be found. Verify that you have typed the URL correctly. As mentioned, works on subdomains not domains.

According to the log you provided, check the bindings in the IIS.

Same as AAM.

Three Bindings:

1- Localhost

2- HTTPS URL

3- HTTP URL
