Hello, I have SharePoint 2016 on premise. My environment consists of 1 APP, 1 WFE, 1 Internal OOS server and 1 OOS in the DMZ. My SharePoint farm is currently bound to the internal OOS. Consider the following scenario: Internal users access internal SharePoint: https://sharepointInternal External users access external SharePoint: https://sharepointExternal https://sharepointInternal and https://sharepointExternal are connected to OOS with https://oosInternal I want Internal users to connect to https://oosInternal and External users to connect to https://oosExternal. Is this possible? Can I bind SharePoint to the OOS in the DMZ as well?

Hi @MDuBose This is not feasible. OOS connection is based on the entire farm. After you have connected to an OOS, if you want to connect to another OOS, it will remind you to disconnect the current connection first. This is not feasible.

Thanks for your response. Let me give you a background to the reason, I thought I needed an "external" OOS server. Currently, end users that are not on my network cannot open documents within the browser. This is because the external SharePoint is bound to connect to an OOS server who's domain is internal. The internal domain is not recognized by the global DNS. So, I thought by adding an additional OOS server with the same external domain as my External SharePoint, would fix this issue. Now, I can see that I cannot connect the farm to more than one OOS. So, is there an alternative? I've activated the "Open Documents in Client Applications by Default" feature from the Site Collections Feature page on my external SharePoint. However, only in Internet Explorer, does the documents open in the application client. I've tested this feature in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and the documents still open in the browser.

You should enable this feature in the library at the same time.

Activate the “Open Documents in Client Applications by Default” in site collection features, and in the library settings->advanced settings-> select “use the server default” for the Default open behavior.

And you could reset IE to check if it can work. Go to internet options->advanced tab->reset.

And you also could do IIS reset to check if it can work.

If the issue still exists, you could create a new library and in the advanced settings, you could select “Open in the client application” for the Default open behavior to check if it can work.

When “Open Documents in Client Applications by Default” feature is activated, in IE, the documents open in it's client application as expected. This feature does not work in Chrome, Edge, or Firefox. It only works in Internet Explorer. In other words, in all browsers except IE, documents still open in the browser, not the client application as expected. In the library settings->advanced settings-> “use the server default” for the Default open behavior is already selected. This did not fix the issue in the other browsers. I've also tried selecting “Open in the client application” for the Default open behavior. This did not fix the issue in the other browsers.

In addition, I've created a new document library. The issue still remains in all browsers except IE.

Will performing an IIS reset cause issues within SharePoint? Do I need to reset IIS on the App and WFE servers?

Hi @MDuBose
When you try to open a file from an on-premises installation of Microsoft SharePoint or from SharePoint Online, the browser defaults to either downloading a local copy or trying to open the file in the browser. This issue occurs regardless of your library settings.

This problem occurs when Netscape Plugin API (NPAPI) support is disabled.

If this problem persists, then it is an integration problem between SharePoint and other browsers. From my experience, whether it is SharePoint 2013, SharePoint 2016 or even 2019, Internet Explorer is always the best user experience.

Hi @Itch Sun-MSFT ,

Internet Explorer is going out of support in 2021 so I doubt many users will use this browser as their default. It appears from my research that the “Open Documents in Client Applications by Default” feature and the library settings, not working, is a known issue that was never fixed by Microsoft.

IE is going out of support for Microsoft 365 only, not SharePoint on-prem/Office Online Server. Since it is a component of Windows, it follows the Windows lifecycle.
