Hi,
The reason for the different display of the "Display Name" and "Name" in the SCOM Monitoring view "Active Directory Domain Services / All States" is due to how the computer name is assigned. When a computer joins an Active Directory domain running any OS from Windows 2000 through Windows Vista, by default, the computer assigns itself a name that combines the host name of the computer (referred to as the "Computer Name" in System Properties) and the Domain Name System (DNS) name of the Active Directory domain that the computer has joined. This combination creates the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) of the computer [1].
The FQDN is comprised of the host or computer name and the DNS name of the domain. Thus, if a computer with host or computer name "Server01" joins the domain "contoso.com," the FQDN of the computer is Server01.contoso.com.
If a computer already has a different DNS domain name that was either statically entered into a DNS zone or registered by an integrated DNS/Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) Server service, the FQDN of that computer will be distinct from the name that was registered previously. It can be referenced by either name [1].
In conclusion, the reason why some lines of the SCOM Monitoring view "Active Directory Domain Services / All States" only display the server name, while others display the FQDN, is due to how the computer name was assigned when it joined the domain.
