Hello,

One of our customer has large SAP estate on Azure. It seems SAP suggest using Premium SSD for all kind of environments - They have got a huge bill associated with Premium SSDs. It's a EA customer. Some of the workloads are running only 12*5.

Other than buying reservations/ saving plans , are there any ways to optimize the cost of Azure Disks?

Applicate your Response. Thank you!!

@anil kumar Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum, Thank you for posting your query here!

This article provides detailed information on Disks and cost optimization.

I would recommend to contact Billing and Subscription team would be the best to provide more insight and guidance on this scenario based on your requirement( region, disk and many more)

For optimizing the cost of Azure Disks in a large SAP estate on Azure, there are several strategies you can consider:

Disk Tiering: Azure offers multiple tiers for managed disks, including Premium SSD, Standard SSD, and Standard HDD. Evaluate the performance requirements of your workloads and consider moving non-critical or low-performance workloads to lower-cost tiers like Standard SSD or Standard HDD. This can significantly reduce the overall cost of your Azure Disks.

Disk Sizing: Review the disk sizes allocated to your SAP workloads and ensure they are optimized for your specific requirements. If you have oversized disks, consider resizing them to smaller sizes. This can help reduce the associated costs.

Disk Sharing: Identify if there are any workloads that can share disks without impacting performance or data isolation requirements. By consolidating multiple workloads onto fewer disks, you can reduce the number of disks provisioned and save on costs.

Availability and Performance SLAs: Assess the availability and performance requirements for each workload. If some workloads don't require 24/7 availability or high performance during non-business hours, consider scheduling them to run on a lower-performance or lower-cost tier during those periods.

Auto-Shutdown: For workloads that are only required during specific hours, consider implementing an auto-shutdown schedule. This ensures that the resources are automatically turned off when not in use, reducing costs associated with disk usage during non-operational hours.

Disk Snapshot Management: Evaluate your disk snapshot retention policies and adjust them based on your backup and recovery requirements. Removing unnecessary or redundant snapshots can help reduce storage costs.

Monitoring and Right-Sizing: Regularly monitor disk usage and performance metrics to identify opportunities for right-sizing. Adjust disk sizes based on actual usage patterns and performance requirements to avoid overprovisioning and unnecessary costs.
