Hi, Tomy. I see your using Storage Spaces, this may be why, as storage spaces might consider it a pool. Dynamic disks provide features that basic disks do not , such as the ability to create volumes that span multiple disks (spanned and striped volumes) and the ability to create fault-tolerant volumes (mirrored and RAID-5 volumes). The following operations can be performed only on dynamic disks: Create and delete simple, spanned, striped, mirrored, and RAID-5 volumes. Extend a simple or spanned volume. Remove a mirror from a mirrored volume or break the mirrored volume into two volumes. Repair mirrored or RAID-5 volumes. Reactivate a missing or offline disk.

Thanks for your answer.

The problem is that I increased the disk size in the Azure portal from 128GB to 256GB for LUN 0 and 1 while my virtual machine was running (if in disk management, my disks were numbered as 4 and 5 as shown in the image above). However, when I checked the disks in my VM's disk management, they were still showing as 128GB.

Next, I restarted my VM, and new disks appeared in my disk management as disk 1 and 2. However, our data disks in the Azure portal still only show 2 disks in LUN 0 and 1.

The question is, why did new disks 1 and 2 appear? Shouldn't our data disks in the Azure portal only have 2 disks in LUN 0 and 1? Is this because I increased the disk size in the Azure portal while the VM was running?

I just went through the process on my test machine:

Had data disk 4 GB (Basic)

Increased to 8GB while VM running

Restarted VM

Still had 1 data disk and was able to resize (as Basic)

It didn't prompt me to change it to Dynamic.

I have a feeling its due to how Storage spaces is pooling the drives, but will do some further testing.

Just adding to this, I spun up a VM, created a storage pool - and increased the Disk size, of a disk using the pool, and now I can't increase it as a Basic disk, so same symptoms. Will recreate the VM and try the same process, by shutting down the VM before resizing.

Same symptoms, whether I had resized while the VM was offline or not with Storage spaces.

Ok, I think I found the problem:

Not supported: resizing the underlying storage used by Storage Spaces Direct. If you are running Storage Spaces Direct in a virtualized storage environment, including in Azure, resizing or changing the characteristics of the storage devices used by the virtual machines isn't supported and will cause data to become inaccessible.

Manage volumes in Azure Stack HCI and Windows Server

Looks like, to use Storage Spaces, you can add more Disks - but can't resize an existing one, to increase the pool.

why is there a storage space in my disk management? I never creating a storage space. The storage space appeared after I restarted my VM.
