Hi,

We've succeeded to migrate users to cloud also creating SMTP relay in Exchange online for on-premises applications, we've only one mailbox server 2016 and we need to remove it.

  • What's the steps needed to remove the exchange 2016 server.
  • Is there any issues we may faces in the future?

We planned to keep azure ad connect server up and running to sync users to cloud.

Thanks,

Ahmed, if you have migrated all your users mailboxes and data over to Exchange online I will suggest you to follow the scenarios and process listed over here - https://video2.skills-academy.com/en-us/exchange/decommission-on-premises-exchange

Scenario 2 will work for you as you want to retain the AAD Connect and sync users. Goodluck my friend.

    Hi @ Ahmed Essam ,

If you still need to keep directory synchronization or need to use Exchange for other purposes(e.g. SMTP relay), it's not supported to remove the last Exchange server.

You need to keep at least one Exchange server on-premises for recipient management.

In scenario two of this document, the actual state required to preserve directory synchronization is shown:

You can also learn more from the other two scenarios mentioned in the article.
