Issue with Bastion and VM Access

Dear Microsoft Support,

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to seek assistance regarding a problem I am facing while attempting to connect to my virtual machine (VM) using Bastion.

Suddenly, whenever I try to establish a connection, I encounter an error message that says "Disconnected," preventing me from accessing the VM. This issue persists even when using the owner account and other user accounts, with the same error message stating, "The machine is currently unavailable." I am perplexed as I continue to incur charges for the VM, despite being unable to utilize it effectively.

I have ensured that there are no outstanding payments or overdue fees, so I am unsure why I am experiencing this inconvenience. I kindly request your prompt assistance in resolving this matter and providing a quick solution.

Hello,

Is your Bastion instance in the same subnet as the VM, or in a different peered vnet?

It is worth checking you have any firewall rules/nsg rules which might be blocking Bastion access. Please see this guide: https://video2.skills-academy.com/en-us/azure/bastion/bastion-nsg

You can also troubleshoot this by using the Connection Troubleshooting tab in the monitoring section of your Azure Bastion resource. Network watcher provides connection troubleshooting where you can check the TCP connect i.e port 3389

It's also worth checking the status of the VM is healthy, by clicking "Resource health", on the VM resource. It may need a restart or re-deploy if it is not healthy.

Can you try connecting to other VM's via Bastion to identify if its a Bastion/connection issue or VM?

As mentioned by @Richard Redgrave above, could you please share the below details for further investigation?

Verify that the target VM is running and healthy.

Do you have NSG associated to AzureBastionSubnet? If yes, could you please make sure all the required rules are configured as per : https://video2.skills-academy.com/en-us/azure/bastion/bastion-nsg#apply

Verify the NSG on the VM subnet allows the AzureBastionSubnet inbound on 3389/22.

If applicable Verify the NSG on the VM NIC allows the AzureBastionSubnet inbound on 3389/22.

NOTE: The Source for the inbound rules has to be ANY and the Destination for the outbound rules has to be ANY.

Verify the resource Health of the Azure Bastion at the time the connection attempt was made.
