I need to understand the across region data transfer cost for 135 GB Linux VM snapshot migration from Azure West US-2 to West US.

I am using following CLI command line to transfer the snapshot into target storage account.

Copy a snapshot to a storage account in another region using the CLI - Azure Virtual Machines | Microsoft Learn

Thanks

    Hello Prakash,

Thank you for your question and for reaching out with your question today.

To estimate the cost of transferring a 135 GB Linux VM snapshot from Azure West US-2 to West US, you need to consider the data transfer cost between these regions. Azure charges for data transfer across regions based on the amount of data transferred.

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to estimate the data transfer cost using the Azure Pricing Calculator:

    1. Determine the Source and Destination Region: In this case, the source region is West US-2, and the destination region is West US.
    2. Go to the Azure Pricing Calculator: Open your web browser and navigate to the Azure Pricing Calculator website (https://azure.com/pricing/calculator).
    3. Select the Azure Services: Click on the "+ Add items" button and search for the relevant Azure services. In this case, you will need to select the appropriate storage account type for the source region (West US-2) and the destination region (West US).
    4. Choose the Storage Account Type: For each region, select the storage account type that you are using to store the snapshot.
    5. Configure the Data Transfer: In the Pricing Calculator, look for the "Data Transfer" section or similar. Enter the amount of data you want to transfer (135 GB) and select "From" West US-2 to "To" West US.
    6. Calculate the Cost: The Pricing Calculator will automatically calculate the estimated cost for data transfer between the two regions.

Please note that the pricing may vary based on the current pricing model, any discounts you might have, and any reserved capacity you've purchased. Additionally, data transfer costs might be subject to change over time, so it's essential to check the Azure Pricing Calculator for the most up-to-date information.

Keep in mind that transferring large amounts of data between regions can incur significant costs, and you may want to consider the overall cost-effectiveness of this migration before proceeding. If the cost is a concern, you might explore other options, such as replicating the VM to the destination region or using specialized migration services provided by Azure.
