Server 2022 - PXE boot via IPv6 fails

Setup is a single Server 2022 box running DHCP and WDS roles. Not using SCCM - just the plain WDS role. IPv4 and IPv6 scopes are configured.

I've added a single boot image and several install images to the distribution server.

Using a very small network setup for testing purposes (one server, one switch, and four clients). No VLANs.

What is working (can PXE boot and make it to the screen where you choose the O/S to install):

  • Legacy BIOS systems
  • EFI BIOS systems via IPv4

What is NOT working is EFI systems via IPv6. The client can receive an IPv6 address and I can get to the point where you have to hit enter for the network boot service. Then I briefly see a message about contacting the server. At this point I get a Windows Boot Manager screen which states that Windows failed to start and an error code of 0xc000000f.

I have not configured any boot image options in the IPv6 scope as there doesn't appear to be any such options (as there are for IPv4).

I've even tried eliminating the switch and connecting the client directly to the server.

What am I missing?

    This issue was related to some issue with the boot files included with Server 2019 and later. I was able to get it working by replacing the files in \RemoteInstall\Boot\x64 with the files from a Server 2016 install.

    Thank you for posting in Q&A forum.

    Please try to narrow down the issue by below method:

    1. Check if IPv6 Configuration is correct and see if there's any IPV6 IP assignemnt on the client.
    2. Check if image is good. You can also download a brand new image from Microsoft Windows Evaluation Center and test

    1. Check if the UEFI Boot File is here and configured well.
    2. Capture Network Traffic by wireshark/network monitor and see if there's any traffic issue between client and WDS server.
