My VM is set to German and I connect to the VM using the web browser. Nevertheless, the keyboard layout is then always English. Even if I change it to German in the VM it remains English.

Azure Bastion doesn't directly control the keyboard layout of the remote virtual machine you connect to. The keyboard layout inside the virtual machine is typically controlled by the operating system settings of that VM.

Here are the steps you can follow to change the keyboard layout inside your Azure virtual machine:

Log into the Virtual Machine: Connect to your Azure virtual machine using Azure Bastion or any other remote connection method.

    Change Keyboard Layout in Windows:

For Windows virtual machines, you can change the keyboard layout through the Control Panel or Settings:

    a. Control Panel Method:

    • Open the Control Panel on the virtual machine.
    • Go to "Clock, Language, and Region" > "Language" > "Advanced settings".
    • Under "Switching input methods", click on "Change language bar hot keys".
    • In the "Text Services and Input Languages" dialog, click on the "Language Bar" tab and check the "Show the Language bar on the desktop" box.
    • Close the dialogs and you should see a language indicator on your taskbar. You can switch the keyboard layout from there.

    b. Settings Method:

    • Open Settings on the virtual machine (Windows key + I).
    • Go to "Time & language" > "Language".
    • Under "Preferred languages", click on "Add a language" to add the German language if it's not already added.
    • Set German as the default language or move it up to the top of the list if it's already added.
    • Click on the German language entry and then click "Options".
    • Under "Keyboards", add the German keyboard layout and remove the English layout if needed.
    1. Change Keyboard Layout in Linux:
    • For Linux virtual machines, you can change the keyboard layout through the system settings:

    a. GNOME Desktop (Ubuntu, Fedora, etc.):

    • Go to "Settings" > "Region & Language".
    • Under "Input Sources", click the "+" button to add a new input source for German.
    • You can then switch the keyboard layout using the keyboard shortcut you've set, often Super + Space by default.

    b. KDE Plasma Desktop (Kubuntu, Fedora KDE, etc.):

    • Go to "System Settings" > "Input Devices" > "Keyboard".
    • Under "Layouts", click the "+" button to add a new layout for German.
    • Set the shortcut for switching layouts and apply the changes.
