Good afternoon,

Currently using a new VM named "SL"with Windows Server 2008. I have a USB back up that has been plugged into my physical server MG. I accessed that server remotely and see the backup usb. How do I take that back up usb data and bring it all into my new "SL" VM server? Please be detailed if possible as I can't risk losing this data.

Simplest solution may be to copy the USB data via a network connection

    \\vmname\C$

    Hi,

Is that a Hyper-V VM? If yes, run Hyper-V Manager as administrator, open the VM Settings and add a new Hard Drive to the SCSI Controller, then select Physical hard drive under Media. If the USB drive is not listed in the drop-down menu, set the drive to Offline in Disk Management.

    Best Regards,

"\vname\C$" how does that actually copy the data from the usb thats in the physical server over into the hyper-v VM? Can you please explain as I'm new to this .

This is just the means, the network connection. You could connect (as below) from host to guest via network then copy over whatever is needed.
