getting an error when connecting to SSAS multidimensional cube from excel, but no error from SSMS or Power BI.

Data connection from Excel to SSAS Multidimensional cube is getting an error message:
"Data could not be retrieved from the database. Check the database server or contact your administrator. Make sure the external database is available, and then try the operation again."
When checking the server in SSMS the cube is available and responds to MDX queries. It also produces results when connected to from Power BI. The data connection from excel worked fine just last week.
We've tried to delete and deploy new, that did not work.
We've tried to create a fresh connection in a new excel file.
Any ideas? TIA.

We are having the same issue that seems to be affecting only one role (so far). Previously this role worked fine connecting from excel and still does for the other cubes but they have lost access to one particular cube from Excel.
If I put a test user into that role I can replicate the issue. Access from SSMS works (haven't tested Power BI access) but no access from Excel. If I add the user to one of the other roles they gain access via Excel again. It will be a pain to rebuild the role.
