I have a 8TB disk File Server VM in Azure. I am planning to migrate the content to Sharepoint.

Which is the best way to do that to not have expansive costs with traffic consumption?

Louri

    Hello Louri,

Migrating a large amount of data from an Azure File Server VM to SharePoint can be a complex task, but there are several methods you can consider to manage costs and traffic consumption:

SharePoint Migration Tool (SPMT): Microsoft provides the SharePoint Migration Tool which can be used to migrate content from the file server to SharePoint Online sites.

Third-Party Tools: There are paid solutions that offer more features and a better migration experience.

PowerShell cmdlets: These are based on the SPMT migration engine and can move files from on-premises SharePoint document libraries and file shares to Office 365.

Azure Data Box and SPMT: This combination can be used to migrate file shares easily to SharePoint Online1. The Azure Data Box is a service that lets you order a device from the Microsoft Azure portal.

You can then copy terabytes of data from your servers to the device. After shipping it back to Microsoft, your data is copied into Azure.

Please note that using the Azure Data Box adds complexity and delay due to shipment time before the data can be copied into an Azure file share.

It’s recommended for scenarios where your data is in a remote location with poor connectivity to Microsoft 365 or your source is very low on resources, and you can scale up your migration by using the Azure Data Box.

Remember, it’s important to evaluate your specific needs, resources, and constraints before deciding on a method.

Also, keep in mind that while some services like Azure Migrate: Server migration are free for the first 180 days for each machine,

you might incur charges for Azure Storage, storage transactions, and data transfer during replication.
