Volume Shadow Copy Storage Area is Grayed Out

We migrated to a new Windows Server 2022 file server. I am trying to enable Shadow Copy on the new one but the option to select where to store the copies is grayed. It is fixed to the same drive I am enabling Shadow copy on. I noticed that the old file server is configured the same. It is storing Shadow copies on the same drive where all the data are. I created a separate disk on the new file server for the shadow copies but I cannot select that drive.

If I try to enable Shadow copy on a different drive like C: it lets me select the storage area. I don't understand why it is grayed out on the drive that contains user data.

The shadow copy drive i created is 80GB and the data volume I want to enable shadow copy on is 3TB, would that be the problem? Do I need to make the Shadow copy drive the same size as the volume I'm enabling it on?

    Hi,

Try enabling/disabling shadow copy on the volume and see if it works. Or you can use vssadmin add ShadowStorage to add a shadow copy storage association and check the error message if it fails to run.
