Troubleshooting Connection to Azure Flexible Server with MySQL Workbench

Hello,

I'm having trouble connecting to an Azure Database for MySQL flexible server using MySQL Workbench. Even though my IP is whitelisted, and the port is allowed in my Windows firewall settings, I'm still unable to connect. For more information, please refer to the attached error screenshot.

I have tried multiple internet connections and even a VPN, but still can't figure out why I am unable to connect.

Can someone please assist me in resolving this issue?

There's no screenshot in your post. Please post it so we can see the error message (black out server name and user name).

If you see that error immediately after clicking button, then it is likely a problem resolving the FQDN of the server. You can open a command prompt and try nslookup to see if the FQDN resolves to IP address properly, similar to below:

nslookup yourMySQLserver.mysql.database.azure.com

If there is a delay of several seconds before you see that error message, it is more likely a network issue where it is having trouble reaching the server.

It is actually taking some time before the error shows up.

Any suggestion on how to tackle the network issue?

For starters, please verify that your public IP is correct, and that they entered in correctly in the allow list on Azure Database for MySQL flexible server. I know, you probably have already checked this 5 times, but humor me. You can use below link to check your public IP:

https://api.ipify.org

If possible, have them send you a screenshot of your public IP showing in the list in the portal. That way you can see for yourself that the two addresses match.

With the above out of the way, one possibility is your local firewall/router device may be blocking "uncommon outbound ports" by default. I've seen this with home ISP routers where they allow very widely-used ports but automatically block any others for outbound. One quick way to test this is to have you try to connect to a different MySQL server in an Azure region near you and see if that connection fails too. Could just create a server, you test, and then delete the server. Only takes minutes to do.

Hi Samer,

We'll need to better understand how your network path is set up.

For example if mysql is listening on port 3306 and it's running in Azure, you won't be able to get to that from a remote machine.

the first thing you should try is to power up a VM inside Azure on the same subnet as your mysql server and verify you can connect from that machine.

Then you'll know your issue is purely network connectivity and not something unusual.

Thanks for your response.

To give more context, the team that set up the server is located in another country as me. They are granting access to people over there and those people are connecting remotely without issues.

They even ran the same test you mentioned with a VM on the same subnet as the MySQL server and they were able to connect.

This is what lead me to believe the problem is a network problem from my end but we couldn't figure out the reason why.
