I have filed a bug against this behavior with our product team. I do not have any ETA on any fix, but the product team is aware of the issue.

Is this expected behaviour? Active directory domains can have a variety of non routable domain names.

The domain should be fully qualified domain name (FQDN) and may be number in the TLD was not qualified. Did you check number in other parts?
