Trying to test vm recovery with MABS. The vmWare VM I backed up is not configured for online, only disk on the MABS server. But when I try and recover. The recover option is not available. For other VMs that have online backups will show the recover option, but only for online. Why is it that I cannot perform a recovery from "disk" when I have a recovery point for "disk"?

Beitler, David - Thank you for contacting us on Microsoft Q&A platform. Happy to help!

Actually, when you selected the disk recovery point for the VM so you might be seeing the Disks from which you can perform Item Level Recovery.

As per the below screen shot, please select "Discovered Virtual Machine" instead of selecting the VM. Then on the bottom (or on the main screen) you will see all the VM listed. Select the VM which you want to restore, and you will see the recover option at the top. You can also select the VM, right click and select recover option.

Hello @Beitler, David Thank you for posting your question on the Microsoft Q&A platform. Happy to help!

Based on the information shared, I understand that you have set up MABS server to backup VMware VM only for disk backup. However, you are unable to perform recovery from disk.

It is possible to restore only the disk of a VMware VM that has been backed up using Microsoft Azure Backup Server (MABS).

Here are the steps to restore only the disk:

    1. Open the MABS console and navigate to the "Recovery" tab.
    2. Select the backup that contains the disk you want to restore.
    3. Select the VM that contains the disk you want to restore.
    4. Select the disk you want to restore and click "Recover".
    5. In the "Recovery Type" dialog box, select "Restore Disk".
    6. In the "Restore Disk" dialog box, select the destination for the restored disk.
    7. Click "OK" to start the restore process.

Once the restore process is complete, you should have a restored copy of the disk that you can use as needed.

Please note that restoring only the disk may not be sufficient to fully restore the VM. Depending on the configuration of the VM, you may need to restore additional components, such as the virtual machine configuration files or other associated files.

Hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
