Hi All,

I have two domains, let's say domain1.com and domain2.com (there is no trust between the two domains). Domain1.com is my domain where my Exchange hybrid environment is hosted. Domain2.com is an external domain to domain1.com. I have applications hosted on domain2.com, and any email from domain2.com is considered external to domain1.com.

I have a distribution list (DL) named DL1@domain1.com with the following setting: Settings > Delivery Management > Allow messages from people inside and outside my organization.

I have a requirement to restrict DL1 so that, except for emails from domain1.com and domain2.com, DL1 members should not receive emails from any other domains. Please guide me on how to create the necessary transport rule.

    Welcome to the Microsoft forum for technical support.

    Based on your description, it is recommended that you follow the steps below to set up this rule:

    1. Log in to the Exchange admin center.
    2. Go to Mail Flow → Rules.
    3. Click "+" to create a new rule.
    4. In the new rule form, create the rule as shown in the screenshot below.

    When i tried to create Transport Rule in onprem i am getting this error.

    SentTo predicate does not allow distribution groups. 'DL1'.

    When i try to create Transport rule in online i am getting this error.

    Error:

    Error executing cmdlet: |System.ArgumentException|SentTo predicate does not allow distribution groups. 'DL1@domain1.com'.

    Exception of type 'Microsoft.Exchange.Management.PSDirectInvoke.DirectInvokeCmdletExecutionException' was thrown.

    Will the transport rule work for a distribution list?

    I am using exchange 2016 hybrid environment. The DL is in onprem and all my users are on exchange online . i.e we create users in onprem and migrate to online. I can create the Transport rule in Exchange online but i dont see the message option in transport rule in exchange onprem. If i create the transport rule in exchange online will it be work. Below screenshot from exchange onprem.
