Is the Config Manager Client installer broken in Config Manager 2403

I am having serious issues re-installing the Configuration Manager client on my Primary Site server since upgrading to 2403 at the start of this week.

When I run ccmsetup on the machine, the last entry in the log file is File C:\Windows\ccmsetup{DC6CEF04-8456-4CF8-86D5-34FBF25FC2EC}\client.msi installation failed. Error text: ExitCode: 1603

Action: SmsDetectInvalidOrderColocUpgrade.

ErrorMessages:

An older version of the ConfigMgr Management Point is installed. Please upgrade the Management Point before attempting to upgrade the client.

Just above this, however, the log file states that the client installer version and the management point version match:

The client version 5.00.9128.1000 matches the MP version 5.00.9128.1000. The client will be installed.

I re-ran the installation of the client on the server before posting this - at the time of writing, there is no management point installed on the site server however the exe believes that one exists:

An MP exists on this machine. ccmsetup 21/06/2024 11:55:38 6032 (0x1790)

I have done everything I can think of to remove this and so far, nothing has worked. I've removed reg keys & folders, ran queries in the SQL database - nothing has worked. I believe the issue to be related to the installer and not the server as this has not posed me an issue previously and the other 2 servers in the environment (it's a lab, the other servers are a DC and a SQL Server - for Config Manager) have both installed it perfectly.

The trouble started when I switched fully to HTTPS mode and the MP re-installed itself. Since then, I've been unable to get the client installed on the server..

The log file is attached. Can someone tell me where on earth the client installer is getting this info from so I can correct it and resolve it, or is this a bug that MS need to address?!

    Hi, @Lewis Thomson

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Q&A forum.

You mentioned there is no management point installed on the site server. Did the site server earlier be configured as Management point? Can we re-install client on other machines now?

You may check this article to see if it helps:

I think I found the problem!

When you look in the ccmsetup log, you see this:

    User's image

This is not possible; while resolving this, I totally annihilated the server and ended up having to perform a full clean of it & the SQL server then re-install the whole lot!

There was nothing in the registry with that product code so the only place left where it could be checking (and finding this) had to be the WMI - when I queried the WMI on the server via PowerShell, I found the following:

    PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-WmiObject -Class Win32_Product | Select-Object Name, Version, IdentifyingNumber

    So I've found the problem.

MSIEXEC /x {58DC68F0-BFB3-477F-9FB7-49F2060965D9} did nothing, so I went into the WMI and manually removed this entry myself. That didn't work, so I rebuilt the repository.

    That didn't work either...

This is the root-cause of it. Either something is still writing this data in here, or it's a stubborn entry I just can't get rid of. Very frustrating; this has to be a bug in 2403, right?!

    I finally fixed it.

There were entries in various places of the server's registry that pointed to the old MP version - I searched through it using the display name for the product in question and deleted them all manually. Once I did this, I re-installed the MP from the console (I'd previously removed it, before combing the registry for remnants) and retried the ccmsetup on the server.

It's just finished installing with error code 0, now. 😊
