Exploring licensing path to use Conditional access as bolt on to M365 business standard, but later use premium

Good afternoon,

I have a pretty basic question re M365 licensing, having recently started administering a Tennant that needs some additional security.

This is a small business, and currently using M365 Business Standard licensing along with Exchange online licensing for a few mailboxes. They are also using Dynamics 365.

I want to Implement conditional access ASAP in order to lockdown access by trusted sites, and understand we need Entra ID P1 as bolt-on licenses, or would get this from Business Premium.

As we do not want/need to other options from premium right now, our preference is to bolt-on Entra P1 for now, however we may consider later this year going to Business Premium for other reasons, but this would not be for about 4 months minimum, but the lockdown is high priority now.

If we got to bolt on licensing now for £4.90 a month per user, and wanted to revoke these later in the year at point we wanted to use licensing of the same within bus premium, would we be able to do that and avoid the duplicate cost until the other licenses expired?

E.g. would there be some kind of 'upgrade' option in that we were buying another product that provided the entra ID P1 features that would give us CA.

Thanks

    Hi @Tim Herman ,

Yes, you can apply the new licenses and remove the old ones in the same process to avoid the duplicate cost. You will need to go in and select the license assignment for the users or groups, clear the checkbox for the old license, and add the checkbox for the new one.
