Is it possible to build azure iotedge for debian9 Stretch?

I know I will need to modify the package.sh and perhaps add a library\package or two to get it to build, but before I go down this trail, I was wanting to know if it is even possible.

While upgrading the OS is a preferred scenario, id like to try less disruptive options first.

aziot-compatibility.sh passed, but i think that only checks to version 1.2.

welcome to this moderated Azure community forum.

The short answer is that Debian 9 Stretch is not mentioned in the Tier 1 or Tier 2 supported platforms.

Tier one platforms are tested by Microsoft.

Tier two platforms are considered compatible because customers have acknowledged it runs Azure IoT Edge.

Still, you could be lucky is the hardware specs are good and you are creative with the OS settings.

Notice:

On June 30, 2022 Raspberry Pi OS Stretch was retired from the Tier 1 OS support list. To avoid potential security vulnerabilities update your host OS to Bullseye.

If you can update to Bullseye, it is recommended.

If you get it running in a secure way, please share a blog post for the community.

I was able to validate that it CAN run on my machine via it working in a nested DinD setup (does not use host docker.sock).

As for updating the OS, that is too risky of an option for me.

Optimal would be running iotedge daemon in a container (using the host docker.sock)

Hello @Michael Moles,

You mean, you did the validation with the 'aziot-compatibility.sh' tool? Version 1.2 is mostly on par with version 1.4 (and the latest 1.5) so that tool cold still work. (no guarantees).

I've not done this myself, I always go for tier 1 Operating Systems.

Take a look at this documentation about running IoT Edge on Kubernetes. There, the runtime is ported to a container.

I have also seen this with Portainer where Azure IoT Edge was deployed on Docker. I was not able to find any documentation about this though.

No i mean I ran iotedge deamon in a container. inside that container it created the edge hub , agent, and all my modules. From the host level, you only see that iotedge daemon container.

Since its running, targeting the host kernel and everything is working, that the kernel does support it. I did run the validation tool, but it looked like it only verified to 1.2.

I have not seen your solution.

All solutions where Azure IoT Edge was hosted completely inside Docker containers was based on hosting he runtime as a separate module (opposite of a daemon process) and the rest as regular docker containers.

Since your question seems very specific, I recommend dropping this question as an issue in the GitHub repo of the opensources Azure IoT Edge. The team is actively reading them.

Yup, that what i ended up doing. I will go ahead and close this because I know the answer is yes, but will be a massive headache reworking all the libraries to get it to work, let alone unsupportable. But this is basically the DinD instance of IotEdge that i used along with an issue on that forum. I will probably open up one again because I really would like to have that daemon running in a container. Seems much more sustainable and maintainable.
