Unable to do MFA twice to log in to Azure

Hello All,

Past one week ago I started to fail to log in to Azure.

I am facing below issue

  • I need to do multi-factor authentication twice to login azure portal and the second time fails
  • First authentication happens to the account I am using work email id. I get the notification on phone and approve it first authentication.
  • Second authentication seems to be to a different account than to this as its alternative methods are different. I have no idea what is this second account that is doing the MFA. Not getting MFA for second authentication in my mobile MS Authenticator
  • Note that I am able to log in to other Microsoft sites. Azure portal is the only one with issues. Appreciated help on this

    It's a good idea to check the Azure Portal login using a different browser to avoid any cookie issues

    If that doesn't help, please check the admin team in clearing the MFA session for you, so that you'll be prompted to register for two-factor verification the next time you sign in

    I understand that when you attempt to log into the Azure Portal, you encounter two MFA prompts. You are able to complete the first prompt, but the second prompt does not send a notification to your Microsoft Authenticator on your mobile device. This issue seems to occur specifically when logging into the Azure Portal.

    The first MFA prompt likely originates from your home directory. After completing this, it appears that you are being redirected to another directory where your user account might be listed as a guest. Since MFA is enabled in that directory as well, it triggers a second MFA prompt.

    As a workaround, you can try logging into the Azure Portal using the following URL format: https://portal.azure.com/<tenantID>. Replace <tenantID> with the ID of your home directory. This approach forces you to log in directly to your home directory, potentially bypassing the redirection issue.

    If you are unsure about your tenant ID, you can find it by entering your domain in the following URL: https://www.whatismytenantid.com/

    Once logged into the Azure Portal, you can review the Microsoft Entra sign-in logs to investigate the root cause of the double MFA prompts.

    I fixed it temporarily. Connect to the portal in the directory with an account that can. Then go to > Microsoft Entra ID > Manage > > Users > [Your bugged user] > Manage > Authentication methods and click on revoke multifactor authentication sessions and Require re-register multifactor authentication.

    During the next connection you'll be able to add a new MFA specifically for this directory in the Authenticator app.
