We are using AzureADConnect version 2.2.1.0 on-prem as the cloud sync client. Is this the same as Microsoft Entra Connect Sync? It is confusing as AzureADConnect is being referenced as Microsoft Entra Connect Sync. We are getting an email from Microsoft telling us to upgrade to the latest version of Microsoft Entra Connect Sync.
Also, when you try to download Microsoft Entra Connect from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=47594, the file itself is called AzureADConnect.msi.

As I understand you have received a notification asking you to upgrade your AD connect to latest version. Also, you want to know if AD connect, and Microsoft Entra connect Sync are same.
Yes, both Microsoft Entra Connect sync and Azure AD connect are same. Earlier we used to call it as Azure AD connect.
Few months back Azure AD name was changed to Microsoft Entra ID. Microsoft Entra ID is the new name for Azure AD. The names Azure Active Directory, Azure AD, and AAD are replaced with Microsoft Entra ID. Microsoft Entra is the name for the product family of identity and network access solutions. Microsoft Entra ID is one of the products within that family.
Following the rebranding of Azure AD to Microsoft Entra ID, all previously related Azure AD products are now referred to as Microsoft Entra products. This is the reason now Azure AD Connect is now known as Microsoft Entra Connect Sync.
Upgrading you sync client is important because, it will reach end of support on 11 Oct 2024.
You can continue to use Entra Connect Version 2.2.1.0 without any problems. Reaching the end of support does not imply that the product will cease functioning; rather, it indicates that Microsoft will no longer provide support for this product.
Microsoft always recommend keeping the Entra connect up to date as per Microsoft. New products will be launched with some bug fixes that were identified with previous versions. Also, sometimes Microsoft launch new versions with some new features.
