Have a brand new Azure VD environment setup for a client.

1 week was fine.

but now Week 2:

It all seems to be user profile/FSLogix VHD related from what I can tell.

We have started to get issues with user profiles no loading.

And also crashing while in use.

In 2 examples users were logged on and had been working, but lost access to their desktop files/documents etc & Outlook crashed & Office licensing would not apply.

after logging off:

I logged back in & got a black screen for over 1 min.

I then forced log off from the VM as an admin

Then logged back on & it loaded fine.

I enabled Drain Mode on the VM’s one by one to test if it was a particular VM/Session host, but seems to be all of them.

Other Symptoms I’ve witnessed 1st hand

  • Start Menu/Task bar not displaying
  • After first loading if you click File Explorer, explorer seems to crash & then reload (taskbar disappears for 1 second then comes back), click File Explorer again & its good
  • Chrome Crashing
  • Outlook Crashing
  • User loading new profile
  • Message saying: “Cannot Open C:\Users{Username}\Desktop” Resource cannot be located (words like that)

Looking at this site: https://www.amorales.org/2020/04/fslogix-troubleshooting-guide.html#:~:text=Navigate%20to

These 2 parts seems the be about the same as we are having.

BUT the fix talks about “File Server” which isn’t valid in our case. Stuck VHDX

This section addresses the following issues:

·       Black Screen at logon for 1-3 minutes

·       Chrome Bookmarks missing

·       Outlook cache missing

·       Task bar buttons missing

·       Profile is missing customizations (new profile)

·       Office asking for activation (generally not an FSL issue, but still a symptom)

·       All of the issues above persisting even after logging out and back in

The issues above are generally caused by the FSL VHDX file getting stuck somewhere. Follow the steps below to unlock it:

1.      Log the user out of the RDS server

2.      Go to the file server and open Computer manager (compmgmt.msc)

3.      Click on Shared Folders/Open Files

4.      Close all open files by the affected user

5.      Log the user back in and the session should open quickly with all of the user's data

6.      If that does not resolve the issue move to the next step

User Has a new Profile

1.      Check the user's FSL folder and inspect the size of their Profile_.VHDX file

2.      Is it less than 450MB in size?

3.      If so, the VHDX might have been corrupt and a new one was created.

4.      Restore the VHDX file from backup

1.      Make sure that the file you are restoring is larger than the one you have now, otherwise this might not be the issue.

    Hi Nathan Jones,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A Platform! Thank you for asking your question here.

To provide a more comprehensive solution to the issue you are experiencing with FSLogix in your AVD environment, I would need some additional information. Here are some details that would be helpful:

    1. What version of Windows are you using in your AVD environment? (e.g., Windows 10, Windows 11, etc.)
    2. What version of FSLogix are you using? (e.g., FSLogix 2.x, FSLogix 3.x, etc.)

Regarding your cloud storage solution for FSLogix, are you using:

    1. Azure Files?
    2. Azure NetApp Files (ANF)?
    3. Another cloud storage solution (please specify)? Are you using any third-party tools or software in your AVD environment that may be interacting with FSLogix?

In your Azure VD environment, you don't have a traditional "File Server" like in a typical on-premises setup, the file server could be:

    1. The RDS server itself, which hosts the user's data and FSLogix VHDX files.
    2. A separate server or storage solution, such as Azure Files or Azure NetApp Files (ANF), that stores the user's data and FSLogix VHDX files. To determine the correct location, you should identify where the FSL VHDX files are stored in your AVD environment. Once you've identified the correct server or storage solution, you can adapt the steps to unlock the stuck FSL VHDX file.
