Hello,
As always, before making such moves, take full backups of your WSUS data and the SUSDB database to prevent data loss in case of any issues.
1: Prepare the New Server
Install Windows Server 2022 on the new VM.
Install the WSUS role. During installation, choose to use a remote SQL server database, and provide the necessary connection information.
Step 2: Back Up the SUSDB on the Current Server
Step 3: Prepare the Remote SQL Server
Install the same or a compatible version of SQL Server that will be housing the SUSDB on the remote server.
Make sure you have the right permissions and networking configurations in place to allow the new WSUS server to communicate with the SQL server.
Step 4: Restore the SUSDB on the Remote SQL Server
Step 5: Configure WSUS on the New Server
Connect the new WSUS installation to the restored SUSDB on the remote SQL server.
Run the WSUS post-installation tasks and configure the WSUS options as necessary.
Step 6: Update WSUS Settings
Step 7: Test WSUS Functionality
Step 8: Decommission Old WSUS Server
Additional Considerations:
Remember to check and modify any firewall rules that might affect communication between the new WSUS server and the remote SQL server.
Best Regards,
Hania Lian
