We have an Azure IaaS database from which we want to copy data via ADF.
For that we are currently using Self hosted IR but since the DB is hosted on an Azure VM itself isn't it possible to directly communicate between ADF and IaaS DB with out IR (By whitelisting some IP or opening some port)
In my opinion, there is no any other option other than using Self hosted IR

We know that every ADF region has specific range of IP's. So cant we whitelist that IPs in the source database/Azure VM and then connect ADF directly to the database?
For On prem to ADF, we definitely need a bridge/IR but since IaaS is cloud itself ; I am not sure.
Any thoughts ?

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A Platform. Thanks for posting the query.
Currently Azure IR can only connect to Azure cloud stores and IAAS DB though procured from Azure, it is designed to provide more control to end user and typically would be in a private virtual network. Self Hosted IR is specifically available to be used in case of accessing any sources that involves firewall and which cannot be accessed in azure public network. Today it is not possible to do the same you are asking from Azure IR.
If you think it is recommended to have such feature, I would suggest to submit an idea in feedback forum which will be closely monitored by data factory product team and will implement in future releases.
