Provide custom auth mechanism for signing a document with Microsoft Office

Hi.
I am trying to find more information about the digital signing process of Microsoft office. As I understand office files can only be signed with MS Office in Windows environment.
I have an experience of signing a document with my ID card and a custom software that ID card providers developed. When I choose the certificate from my ID card and want to sign, the MS office redirects me to the custom application of ID card provider where I pass the authentication and only after it signs the document.
Now I need to implement a similar functionality without ID card and ID card reader but I cannot find any documentation about the APIs or documentation that I need to look at to better understand this process.

can you please help me to get any the documentation which describes the process and APIs of office document signing and any mechanisms that those APIs provide to bind my custom authentication process to it?
