We used to have a Visual Studio Enterprise license and now we currently have a Visual Studio Professional license.

I have currently Enterprise edition which was installed 3 years ago. Do I need to uninstall it and replace it with Professional edition?

Unfortunately you have to uninstall Enterprise. Note that you can have multiple VS versions and editions installed at the same time. So you could install Professional without uninstalling Enterprise. However if you never plan to have an Ent license again then you might as well uninstall it.

From experience I would recommend that you uninstall Ent first and then install Pro. The reason is that uninstall tends to remove things. While VS has gotten better at keeping editions/versions separated there are still a couple of cases where uninstalling VS might break an existing edition. By uninstalling Ent first and then installing Pro you would avoid this. If you really want to install Pro first then I'd recommend repairing the Pro install after you uninstall Ent, just to be safe.
