Client backup under Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials keeps failing

For some reason the backup for one Windows 10 client keeps failing at around 10% . The report from the backup in the dashboard says the data cannot be read and to run Chkdsk.exe.

I have done this numerous times, both from the GUI and an elevated command line, but the Event Viewer on the client reports no errors. Yet the SBS dashboard says there is a disk error.

I am not sure what is wrong. I thought it was the client's SDD but I have also run the manufacturer's disk tool and that reports that the drive is healthy.

I hope someone can help!

    Hi,

Before the issue happened, was there any changed made on the windows client, such as windows update or hotfix installation?
Please run "get-hotfix" in PowerShell as administrator to get the hotfix list installed recently.

If no change has been made, you might need to uninstall the server essential connector, unjoin and rejoin the domain and then reinstall the server essential connector. After that, test if the backup can be successfully completed.

    Thanks,

    Eleven

    Hi Eleven,

Thanks for your suggestion. There are two updates and eight security updates since 04/01/21, with the most recent three days ago.

The backups have not been working for months, so I doubt this is a recent issue.

I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the connector for SBS 2011 Essentials.

What I do note is that I cannot display the Launchpad. When I select it from the Windows menu and run it (including as an administrator), it will not display. It makes me think something is wrong with the installation that is not resolved by removal and re-installation.

    Kind regards,

    Andrew

    Hi,

You can check if there is any update you have installed related to .Net Framework which might impact the connector.

Or you could use another hard disk to install a fresh windows and see if it works.

    Thanks,
    Eleven

Thanks Eleven. I thought the drive was faulty originally. I will check the updates. I think I might need to try a fresh Windows installation. Failing that a new hard disk, but odd that the manufacturer's drive utility shows no errors.
