DW Upgrade (VMWare with SSD or Physical box)?

Good day,

I am designing architecture for new DW that can handle paralism
3 tiers (Data storage, persentation, vizualizer)

External company has done an assessment on the environment, the feedback is that the 3 ties on VMWare would work
currently we only have 1 but i dont really like vm for dw as paralism and speed issues

I heard that sql19 fixes a lot of execution planning for indexing with columnar, please assist on how the VM configuration should be as best practise?
i wanted it on physical with ssd but with the data center migration in 3 years time buying physical hardware is maybe not a good idea
i thought of azure but its dependant on internet line/bandwidth but doing massive erp etracts will be mighty slow
my experience with current dw vm is that it sucks but i need to get performance badly as users will be connecting doing selfservice with 2 comapny bi instances on 1 dw vm

please help?
