Can't log into the Authenticator App

I want to use authenticator when logging into Office365 via portal.office.com. I can log into the portal and it sends the verification code as a text message to my phone. No problem.

I installed the Microsoft Authenticator app on my Android phone. When I try to log into it, if fails. I use the very same email address and password that I use in the portal for Office365.

So, apparently my email and password work in the portal, but not in the app. Now what do I do?

    Is Microsoft Authenticator enabled for your profile in your tenant?
    (in portal.azure.com - go to azure ad - security - authentication methods) - check Microsoft Authenticator App
