Help restore old WHS v1 backups

My son is trying to recover some old data that I backed up with WHS v1 back in 2013. I checked my old external drives and found my manual backup of the WHS server. It was a copy of the server D:\folders{00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4} to the external hard drive T:\Backups{00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4}.

I bought an old WHS DVD (Build 3790 Service Pack 2) and fired up a VM and got to work. After installing WHS, I shut down the VM and mounted the virtual hard drive and copied over the folder (1.2TB) and restarted WHS. I've also tried using net stop/start WHSBackup.

After doing this, I am seeing backup warnings that my old client PCs have not been backed up since 2013, but I'm not seeing any backups on the Compters & Backup tab in the WHS Console. I've tried doing a server reinstall and nothing I've done will show me the backups. I have also adjusted the Automatic Backup Management options to the maximum values before the reinstall and the settings have persisted, but still can't see the backups. I've also tried changing the clock in the VM to 2015 to see if the date is causing any issues, but the VM keeps resetting to the current date on every reboot.

Any suggestions on other things I can try? Is there any other way to recover data from the Backup Database folder?

    I had to add registry entries to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Home Server\Transport\Clients for the backups to be visible. The values could be discerned from the {GUID}.Machine.configdat file in the backup folder. I had to add the Clients key, a subkey under that for {GUID}, and then I added all the string values from the {GUID}.Machine.configdat file, though I am guessing only the first 2 mattered. I am surprised that both the backup service did not rebuild these registry entries and that the document I linked above did not mention these entries.

    It is also worth noting that I also needed to attach a client to WHS to do the restore. You cannot do the restore from WHS alone.
