WHS2011 won't update Homeserver.com DNS entry

My ISP recently changed my IP address and WHS2011 won't repair my myname.homeserver.com connection.

When trying to repair through the console I get the following errors:

88861-image.png

If I do a whois search on the URL for my myname.homeserver.com it shows the wrong IP address, but I can access my WHS login page by going direct to the correct external IP address shown in my router, and IIS shows that I have a current HTTPS SSL certificate issued in December last year.

I can't find any way of updating the myname.homeserver.com DNS settings manually, or even accessing any of the details associated with my myname.homeserver.com address now that Microsoft Live accounts have been deprecated.

Just something to be aware of: I had changed my Microsoft Live password about a month ago and one of my WHS2011 stopped updating it's DNS. I tried the repair function in the dashboard settings and it doesn't work. I pulled the pw from the registry @: hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows server\domain manager\activeconfiguration\password and EVENTUALLY after, and only after a reboot and clicking repair, it stated the credentials weren't valid. So I entered my ID and new pw, hit enter and the dashboard crashed. trying again leads to the setup failure message - something like "domain not setup, try later". if I knew how to encrypt the password I would just update it manually in the registry but that doesn't seem likely. Where's Olaf Engelke when you need him?! :)

Weird thing is, I pulled a new drive, clean installed and when I tried to setup the domain from scratch, it gave me the same error, try again later message immediately after logging in.

I'll be researching more and will post if I find a solution. Maybe your issue is also due to a changed live password.

    Hi,
It sounds more like a DNS problem after changing your IP address.
You need a DNS host to point the domain at. At the DNS Host you'll need to configure a record, like myserver.example.com, to point to your IP. You already have your router configured to forward the IP to your server.
Also you could try to check the logs in %ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows Server\Logs\Dashboard.log.
You may find some information about your issue. For example it may refer to live.com profile service.
Hope this helps and please help to accept as Answer if the response is useful.
    Best Regards,

    Hi Carl,

Thanks! That gave me something new to look at and yes, this is definitely a DNS host problem, but WHS is supposed to update that automatically.

I found the following in the log file you suggested after trying to run the WHS Remote Web Access Setup wizard:

[7628] 210420.220538.9524: ConnectivityCenter: Unexpected error happens while checking Domain Name Provider Credentials
[7628] 210420.220538.9524: ConnectivityCenter: System.ServiceModel.FaultException`1[Microsoft.WindowsServerSolutions.RemoteAccess.Domains.DomainManagerFault]: The creator of this fault did not specify a Reason. (Fault Detail is equal to DomainManagerFault:[Reason:CommunicationFailure, Message:GetDynDnsRpsConfigs failed, Detail:An error occurred while making the HTTP request to https://dyndns.domains.live.com/service/livedyndns.asmx. This could be due to the fact that the server certificate is not configured properly with HTTP.SYS in the HTTPS case. This could also be caused by a mismatch of the security binding between the client and the server. ]).
[4920] 210420.220538.9533: ConnectivityCenter: Job finish. Result: Success
[7660] 210420.220538.9533: ConnectivityCenter: Job DomainNameProviderCredentialsDiagnosticsJob complete, 66% done.
    [4500] 210420.220538.9572: ConnectivityCenter: DDNSUpdateAttemptionInfo.DDNSUpdateStatus: False
[5168] 210420.220538.9572: ConnectivityCenter: Job finish. Result: Success
[7660] 210420.220538.9582: ConnectivityCenter: Job DDNSUpdateDiagnosticsJob complete, 73% done.
    [7916] 210420.220538.9778: ConnectivityCenter: DomainNameResolveableInfo.ExternalIP: XXX.XXX.XX.XX
[1696] 210420.220538.9778: ConnectivityCenter: Job finish. Result: Success
[7660] 210420.220538.9778: ConnectivityCenter: Job DomainNameResolveableDiagnosticsJob complete, 80% done.
    [4352] 210420.220539.4309: ConnectivityCenter: DomainServiceReachableInfo.ReachableStatus: False

Where the XXX.XXX.XX.XX above is my old external IP address. So I don't know if this means that the WHS has asked the DNS Host to update my IP address with the correct value and this is the (failed) result when it does a lookup, or if the WHS is actually sending my old IP address to the DNS host as it thinks this is the right address. Not sure how I would check that?

There is also a connection failure log regarding connection to https://dyndns.domains.live.com/service/livedyndns.asmx. I assume this could be telling me that the WHS failed to connect with the DNS host updater service, but I don't know how to troubleshoot why and I've tried visiting this website to see if I could do a manual update and it seems to be a scripted access site rather then a manually accessible site.

Do you know if there is a manual tool in the WHS management suite that allows me to update the DNS entries, or get more info on why is is failing?

    Thanks for any further tips.

    Stuart

    Hi,
    Thank you for your information.
As far as I know, try the Re-Run Router Config Wizard. If the auto-run fails, reconfigure it manually. When you're done, go to the RWA Config wizard. Try disabling the RWA and enabling it after restarting the system, which will probably allow you to restart the configuration.
