Generating an app password in the Azure portal

Hi - looking for some help on app password setup.

Right now I can create and generate an app password using the command line as follows:

az ad sp create-for-rbac -n "myappname" --years 2

I am wondering if I can create the equivalent from inside the Azure portal. I have tried the following steps:

  • Create app
  • Create client secret
  • Setup an endpoint using the EXPOSE API menu option.

But I think I'm missing something because the app password I get from the client secret screen does not work. But if I run the command line shown above, the password generated there works. So I'm thinking that command does something that I'm missing when I try to set things up manually in the Azure portal.

Thanks!

What authorization (Role) did you give the app? By default, the "az ad sp create" command gives contributor rights to the subscription. Which is probably why your authentication works with the command
