I wanna restart a Sql server running on a vm which host replication on it, is it safe to just stop the log and snapshot reader and restart the server or do I also have to disable the publisher and distributor

Hi,

Should be safe to stop both snapshot and log reader agents.

Then as long as you don't have any long running transactions you can restart the SQL Server using the console or shutdown command during a low activity period or during a maintenance window.

A clean shutdown of an SQL Server occurs in below scenarios :

Stop SQL server using services console.

Shutting down your server

Running "SHUTDOWN" command in SSMS

Just bear in mind that there is replication running on this instance publisher but distributor and subscriber on a different server.
Is it just enough to stop log reader and snapshot reader and log reader agent from replication node and no need to disable the publisher or distributor and once the log reader is stopped it’s safe to go ahead and stop the instance without breaking the replication.
And then start the server back up and turning the log reader back on, please confirm

You do not actually need to stop the agents prior to stopping the services, the replication will pick up where it left off.
If you wish to stop the agents prior to stopping the services then of course you can; stop the Log Reader Agent then the Distribution Agent.

But definitely no need to disable the distributor and publisher from replication node just the log reader agent should be sufficient ?

Cos I couldn’t find the distributor agent, all I was able to find is the log reader agent and snapshot agent , but like you said if the log reader is sufficient then that should be fine with

Yes it's fine if you don't have a distributor agent :-)

The distributor agent is on another server in that cass just the log reader wich is on the machine I’m restarting should be sufficient.?

If it's on another server, then you don't have to worry about the distributor service.
