Running CHKDSK on USB external backup device connected to SBS

We have an SBS 2011 server with a USB attached external backup drive. For the last few weeks I've been noticing block error notifications being reported for this device, and 1 backup error due to CRC errors.

I'd like to run a CHKDSK on the device to correct the errors if possible, but Windows refuses to do so. Rather it reports that I'm going to have to do so on a reboot, e.g., as when attempting to run CHKDSK on the OS partition. I've tried pulling the drive, attaching it to another machine and running CHKDSK from there, however, the OS reports the drive is inaccessible . . . I'm assuming this is a security feature.

Is there any way to CHKDSK this drive without having to restart our production server and wait for the operation to complete?

    Hi,

    You may try below first:
Open File Explorer – click Computer section on left sidebar – right click the USB drive on right sidebar and select Properties – Tools – Error checking – check

In general, if you want chkdsk to correct disk errors, you cannot have open files on the drive. If it prompts for system restart, please wait for an appropriate time to re-start the system and run chkdsk again.
