how to delete disk of replicated VM without having to start replication from scratch?

We have identified a number of servers that have a huge backup disk on the server and has been replicated to We need to remove couple of disks that are currently replicated to Azure Recovery services without having to do the server from scratch,
we would like to remove these disk without having to delete the complete VM and start replication from scratch

From the details provided in the post, What I understand is that, you have replicated your on-premise servers/VMware VMs to Azure using Azure Site Recovery.

You've mentioned, identified huge backup disk on the server - You mean these disks are backed up using Azure backup or any other backup software?

You've mentioned, you want to remove couple of disks - You want remove the disks in Azure which are already replicated to Azure or the disks on the source machines?

Hi Sadiq

Yes these are Application backups that are available in the other disk

we would like to keep in the On Premise but remove it from the Azure Replica.

@Anand Rajackal Somasundaram - Am afraid to say, hot removal of a disk is not possible for VMware machines. We are tracking this item for release by the end of this year. As of now the only work around we have is to disable replication for the machine and enable again with the updated set of disks.

i was experimenting with this API, if i want to remove a managed disk, should i use the original managed disk ID or the id of the replicated disk with the suffix ASR_REPLICA in the request body?

@Abhinav Hegde You should use the ID of the replicated disk with the suffix ASR_REPLICA in the request body.

The ASR_REPLICA suffix is added to the name of the replicated disk to distinguish it from the original disk. This replicated disk is created in the target region during the replication process and is used for failover and failback operations.

When you remove a managed disk using the Replication Protected Items API, you are removing the replicated disk from the replication policy. Therefore, you should use the ID of the replicated disk with the ASR_REPLICA suffix to ensure that the correct disk is removed from the replication policy.

You have to revoke the access to disk and then delete. Because there will be an active shared access signature outstanding for your disk. Go through below.
