Mail Merge duplicating entire page, then moving onto next label

Hello!

I am trying to create nametags for an event our office is hosting soon. I'm using mail merge to do so, specifically the Avery 5392 template. I select the template, then the list that I want to use in the select recipient tab. After designing and inserting all the appropriate fields, I select update labels, and all the design and formatting transfers to each label as it should. However, when I update the labels, preview results, and even finish and merge using the edit individuals option, the labels don't generate as they should. The Avery 5392 template has six nametags per page, and it duplicates each label per page.

By that I mean each name tag is replicated six times, then it will move on to the next label. Everything is there, but I don't need six copies of each nametag. I've tried searching, but nothing I've found online is working. Anyone have any ideas?

    Hi @Cameron Craft

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Q&A Support and for describing your issue in detail.

From your description, it sounds like the mail merge fields may not have been inserted correctly into the first label before clicking “Update Labels.” If the first label contains static content (not merge fields), Word will replicate that static content across all labels.

    Here's how to fix it:

    1. Insert your merge fields into the first label only
    2. Click Update Labels this should copy the fields to all labels
    3. Press Alt + F9 to view field codes
      • Make sure each label (except the first) starts with «NextRecord»
    4. Preview Results → each label should now show a different record
    5. Finish & Merge → Edit Individual Documents

If the Avery 5392 template doesn’t behave correctly, you can recreate the layout manually using a 3x2 table and insert merge fields directly.

If you need any further assistance or have additional questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I'm here to help.

Thank you again for your patience and for choosing Microsoft Q&A forum.

After you have updated the labels, make sure that each label after the first has a «Next Record» field at the beginning.
