The borders on tables in Microsoft Word keep disappearing for all people in my company

For all users at our business, when we open up Word files with tables within them, the borders of the tables disappear and we have to manually add them back. Does anyone know why this happens and what we can do to fix this?

Also in our company (since 31-Oct-2025) tables loose design, in case docx is in onedrive and minimal 2 persons open it with autosave on.

We are having the same issue at our company with our Word 365. It just started in the last week or so. There are quite a few posts in message boards online from people having the same issue. Is this related to a recent update? There is no way so many people suddenly having this issue is a coincidence.

In our case, the files are saved in a SharePoint folder. These are documents that have never had issues before, and it seems to affect all of our documents. Users are not removing the borders. It is happening on its own. We can reapply the borders by modifying the saved table style (like Table Grid, for example, which now appears in the Table Styles without borders), but once we close the document, the issue just comes back when it is reopened.

Users at our business are also experiencing this issue increasingly more day after day. This began on the 28th last week with a handful of documents and since it's has spread to further documents. We have 'track changes for everyone' enabled on all documents that have been affected and when I check the version history, no amendment regarding the removal/amendment of table borders was carried out. For investigation purposes, I also tried restoring the version that I noticed the problem began occurring on, however, once I open the restored document, the table borders appear fine. Please can you advise?

I've seen it at my company too. Word documents are shared across a Teams/SharePoint format. It doesn't appear to affect single column tables. But all multi-column tables have lost their border formatting.

When user saves a file hosted in SharePoint while it is open by another user same thing happening here as well. The issue started few days ago.

We're experiencing this issue as well. It started after a recent update. Users have to continually reapply borders to their tables after they randomly disappear. The documents impacted are stored in OneDrive/SharePoint.

It’s happening at my organisation also. Was able to replicate the issue to our L2 support team and I’m hoping they can raise with Microsoft. It’s causing chaos across our management system documents.

When submitting a support request via 365 tenant - this AI generated response appears, mentioning that There is no immediate fix.

"The issue of table borders and other table formatting being intermittently removed or altered is related to a known problem where table layouts unexpectedly change after updating to version 2508 (build 19127) of Word. This can cause columns or rows to be displaced or extend beyond page boundaries. The Word team is currently investigating this issue. There is no immediate fix available yet."

we have experienced the same, and also color of some of our rows went black where they were blue before . same time line. word docs saved on OneDrive and shared with other users.

Same issue here. Our team is working on a report with over a hundred tables, and the borders keep disappearing. We keep restoring the last properly formatted version, but that means losing new data every time. It’s very frustrating.

We are having all the same issues mentioned by others. I'm in an industry where we are very concerned with compliance. We are seeing borders and gridlines disappear but more concerning is whole header content disappearing. Hoping Microsoft gets on this STAT!

Hi tables now looks OK but font in styles change to Times New Roman in this case :

Person A open document shared on onedrive

Person B open the same document (at this moment everything looks good)

Person B close the document (person A still has it opened)

Person B open document again and fonts on styles are changed to Times New Roman (Person A has still right fonts)

Person A close and Open the document and fonts are changed

Its absolutely frustrating !!!

Does the issue still occur if you hold down the SHIFT key while opening the document?

We are having the same issue and have narrowed it down to this scenario:

Word Documents are stored in SharePoint
User 1 opens in Word application, table styles are present
User 2 opens in Word in browser and selects to edit the document in Word app
The switch from browser to Word app appears to remove the table styles with borders and replaces with no borders style

Do you see this in Word Online (OneDrive and/or SharePoint)? If you download the document and view it in a local installation of Word, does the problem persist?

If possible, share such a problematic document with the forum so that we can have a closer look. Of course, any personal information should be removed from the document before you share it.
