Just been told by a customer our Skype landline number is not working. Research online and see a suggestion it can be reactivated in MS Teams. How do we do this?

    Dear @Toby T,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

You can’t “reactivate” a Skype landline number in Microsoft Teams. Skype Numbers (the paid inbound phone numbers) were retired with Skype in May 2025. Existing subscriptions continued only until their current expiry; renewals/reactivations are no longer possible.

For more information, please refer to the Microsoft Official Document here: Skype is retiring in May 2025: What you need to know

To ensure uninterrupted service, we are moving to Microsoft Teams Phone, which provides full business calling features. Skype users can move to Microsoft Teams Free, which offers many of the same core features and more. Sign in to Microsoft Teams Free on any supported device using your Skype credentials and your contacts and chats will automatically be transferred. You will also receive a notification in the Skype app prompting you to take action to migrate your data. For more information, please refer to the Microsoft Official Document here: Moving from Skype to Microsoft Teams Free and Skype Dial Pad now available in Teams Free

The Skype Dial Pad is available to remaining paid users from the Skype web portal and within Teams Free. To transfer your Skype Number, contact your new carrier or learn more here. Additionally, we will no longer offer paid Skype features to new customers, including Skype Credit and subscriptions that allow you to make and receive international and domestic calls.

To use the Dial Pad on the web, sign in at calling.web.skype.com. If you have an active subscription or active Skype Credit, the Dial Pad will open automatically. If you don’t have an active subscription or active Skype Credit, you will receive a popup to open Skype’s My Account page. For more information, please refer to the Microsoft Official Document here: How do I make a call in the Skype Dial Pad? and Make a call with Skype Dial Pad in Microsoft Teams Free

Note: To access the Skype Dial Pad on Teams Free, make sure to update your Teams app to the latest version.

I hope this information is helpful. Please follow these steps and let me know if it works for you. If not, we can work together to resolve this.

Please understand that our initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

Thank you for your patience and your understanding. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.

I'm looking forward for your reply.

    Dear @Toby T,

Thank you for checking with your VOIP provider and for reactivating your Skype Credit.

We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused by our Skype landline number no longer working. Microsoft retired Skype Numbers earlier this year, and unfortunately, they cannot be recovered or reactivated once expired. Microsoft retired Skype Numbers earlier this year, and there is no option to renew or port them after the cutoff.

Note: As Microsoft Community moderators, please understand that we are not involved in product design decisions and do not have direct access to the development roadmap, we want to assure you that your feedback has been acknowledged and is valued.

Therefore, we recommend moving to a modern telephony solution for long-term reliability: Microsoft Teams Phone offers full business calling features (auto attendants, call queues, compliance recording). You can choose Microsoft Calling Plan, Operator Connect, or Direct Routing depending on your needs. For reference: Microsoft Teams Phone

In this time, you can keep using the Skype Dial Pad for outbound calls while your credit lasts. For inbound calls, please share an alternative number or direct customers to email/chat until your new solution is live.

Note: Please be reassured that you are not alone, I’ll continue to monitor this case and will reach out to you with any new updates as soon as possible.

Again, we apologise for this disruption. Thank you for bearing with us while we make these changes.

I hope this information is helpful. If you have any further questions or need clarification, please feel free to reach out.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
