Unable to connect to public IP address on Load Balancer

I have created a Load Balancer instance with public IP address on port 10 000, with a backend pool of two VMs running a REST API service on port 10 000, but I am unable to connect to the public IP address of the load balancer on port 10 000 (or any port, for that matter) both outside the VNET and inside. Just to be sure, I've also opened the ports directly on the VMs to all traffic, and I'm able to connect directly to them just fine.
The diagnostic tool in Azure shows no errors on inbound connectivity, and no problems with NSGs blocking health probes, yet I am unable to connect to the load balancer.
I have successfully set up an application gateway with roughly the same configuration, and this works fine, but would like to try load balancer as well.
Any suggestions as to what could be wrong or how I can diagnose this issue further?

- What is the Health probe status of the Load Balancer? If they are showing as unhealthy, please refer to this document to go through common configuration errors.

"There aren't any known Azure platform problems affecting this Load Balancer."
As I've already written, the connectivity troubleshooter shows there are no issues.

2021-11-01T08:25:07.983+00:00 @Vetle Are the VM's Security Groups allowing the respective port in the NSG rules? Could you please share a snapshot of the backends security rules?
Do you get any error while trying to connect to the LoadBalancer? If so, please share the same.

Connectivity troubleshooter shows no problems in the NSG rules. Just to be safe I opened the ports to all, and still no change.
The error I get (using curl, for instance) is connection timeout.What problems should I be looking for?
I had absolutely no problems setting up an application gateway to the exact same ports.
