But when I go to apply the template, it is not found in the "From your Organization" tab in the "Apply a site template" option. states "Your organization hasn't created any site templates.

Any help would be great!!

    Dear @Paul Gibson ,

Thank you for your post in our forum.

Custom templates (or third-party templates) made by your organization using site scripts will display in the site template gallery based on the type of site a user chose to start with - either a communication site or team site.

Therefore, it is likely that all the custom site templates will not appear in the site template gallery at once. Soon, users will have the ability to choose to view all custom site templates in the From your organization tab regardless of the type of site chosen.

    More information about site template.

You could create a site script by using JSON template with desired actions such as creating lists, applying a theme etc. Then add the site script into your tenant.

After adding the site script into your tenant, you could choose the custom template from your organization in Apply a site template.

Thank you for your response, this is the same answer I found, but it does not seem to provide me with a clear answer or I am totally missing it:

As stated "Custom templates (or third-party templates) made by your organization using site scripts will display in the site template gallery based on the type of site a user chose to start with - either a communication site or team site."

Is this saying that the "Save site as template" does not really serve a purpose and cannot be used as the above describes a solution "using scripts". Therefor the only way to add templates is via custom script?

On the side of the script. How would I take the downloaded .wsp and create a script using that file? Are you saying that if I create a site the way I want it to look within SharePoint, then figure out what code does what; I will then need to start from scratch and learn JSON in order to have a template to work for me?

Thank you again for your time!
    Paul

What is the purpose of these templates you can create from the List settings (creating a .stp template file)?

How to restore / reapply them?

It's very easy to create these and easy to upload/download these .stp files, and on top of that they also support including the list content, not just the schema/design.
