There must be something BIG going on with IE Next, because your team is remarkably quiet. It must be 2001...

Chris; Is there any chance you can post (either here, or on the IE Blog) something about the next version of IE? I'm not trying to rant like others, I was just hoping for some tidbits of info to feel in the loop as to what progress is happening. I believe you mentioned on a podcast that a potential layout rendering engine might be in the works for IE8? Can you elaborate, or just indicate what some of the difficulties in the current one are, that you are hoping to overcome? I know that making a written statement on either blog is sometimes read as a written promise of features to come, thus there is a shyness to write anything before it is official, but I was wondering if you might be able to highlight some of the things that you (personally) would like to see fixed/added in the next release(s) of IE? Finally (I know, long comment), is there any "thoughts" you can share on the developer opt-in strategies for IEs future with regards to preferring standards based options over quirks? Thanks, Carl

Hi Chris I do believe that you have a hard job. One which draws a lot of animosity from web developers at large. I only arrived at the knowledge of CSS last year just as IE7 was released and 3 months later IE7 was forced on to me by a security update. I did try to resist but that was causing other problems with the OS so I relented. I really wanted to keep IE6 for testing since what did I know then about what bugs to be aware of, I wanted to learn about them first hand. I guess density was telling me to focus on IE7 instead since I unknowingly had a future roll in exposing it bugs for all to see. Finding on a Mozilla blog a reference to IE8 and now seeing it mentioned again above I am very interested in what is happening. Why the secrecy? Does it render my IE bug examples on my site as IE7 does or has hasLayout become part of history. I have many more bugs to demo on my site. My efforts are to help IE8 match the level of standards support as the other browsers have now. This would move the web many steps forward. Good luck with IE8. Take care.
